I. An invitation
Think of a three-digit number. Any one at all, so long as its digits are not all the same. Write it down somewhere I cannot see it, on the back of an envelope, in the margin of whatever you were reading before this. Now do a small and patient thing with it, the kind of idle thing a bored child does at the back of a classroom while the clock refuses to move. Take its three digits and arrange them into the largest number they can make. Then arrange the same three digits into the smallest number they can make. Subtract the smaller from the larger. You will have a new number in your hands. Do exactly the same thing to that one, and to the one after that, and to the one after that. Keep going.
I already know where you will end up. You will end up at 四九五.
You do not believe me, and you are right not to, because belief is not what is being asked of you here. Belief is the currency of the ordinary conjuror, the man who needs you to look at his left hand so that his right may work unwatched. What I am offering you is the opposite of that. Try it. Whatever door you walked in through, whatever number you plucked out of the nine hundred that were available to you, the corridor bends the same way for all of them and lets every one of them out into the same lit room. Six turnings at the very most, and usually fewer, and there it is, waiting, patient, already arrived before you: 四九五. It does not matter in the least that I cannot see your paper. The number was never truly yours to begin with. It belonged to 四九五 from the first stroke of your pen, the way a raindrop belongs to the sea a long while before it has finished falling.
I have written the number in the Japanese hand, 四九五, and I am going to keep it in that hand for the whole of this essay, so I should tell you plainly why. A number written in a language you cannot read stops being a mere quantity. It stops being the answer to a sum. It becomes a name, and a name is a different kind of thing entirely. Four hundred and ninety-five is arithmetic, a station on the endless number line, forgettable, passed through a thousand times a day by anyone counting anything. But 四九五 is a sign carved above a doorway in a script you do not command, and a sign you cannot read is a sign you are obliged to respect. It could mean anything. It could be holy. Half of all magic has only ever been the deliberate making-strange of the familiar, the turning of a common word until the light catches an edge of it you had never noticed, and I want you to see this most common of things, a middling three-digit number, from an angle strange enough that it can astonish you again.
For it should astonish you. We have grown so used to numbers that we have forgotten they were ever frightening. To the people who first counted, a number was a living power, a spirit that could be invoked and could refuse. Somewhere along the centuries we tamed them, filed them into ledgers, taught them to sit still in spreadsheets, and in the taming we mistook obedience for emptiness. We began to believe that because a number can be used to price a sack of grain it can be nothing more than the price of grain. This essay is an argument against that belief, and 四九五 is its witness, because 四九五 will not sit still. Walk toward it from any direction and it reaches out and takes hold of you. That is not a metaphor and it is not a trick of my phrasing. It is a fact you can verify tonight with a pencil, and it is stranger than any lie I could tell you about it.
So here is the shape of what follows. We are going to go through the doorway and down, into the plain mechanism that drags every number home, and I promise you the mechanism is more beautiful than the mystery it explains, which is the rarest thing a mystery can do. Then, having understood how the spell is cast, we are going to climb back up into the older and dimmer regions where people have always hung their meanings upon this number, the omens and the angels and the letters that are secretly numbers and the numbers that are secretly names. We will find 四九五 wearing the colours of prosperity in one country and the colours of death in another, the very same three marks, and we will ask what that tells us about numbers and about ourselves. But we begin, as all honest magic begins, with the trick, performed openly, in good light, with nothing up the sleeve. Take your number. Let us walk it down.
II. The descent
The ritual is old enough now to carry a name, and the name is Kaprekar's routine, though we will come to the man who lends it that name in his own time. For the moment attend only to the rite, because a rite is a thing you do with your hands before you understand it with your head, and this one asks almost nothing of you. Take the three digits of your number. Build from them the highest tower they will make, the largest arrangement, digits marshalled from greatest down to least. Then build from the very same digits the lowest ground they will make, the smallest arrangement, digits laid out from least up to greatest. Set the low beneath the high and subtract. What remains you feed back into the mouth of the rite, and you turn the wheel again, and again, until it will turn no more.
Let me walk a single soul down the stairs so that you can watch it descend, one step at a time, and feel in your own chest the odd gravity of the thing. Begin, quite arbitrarily, with 201, a number with nothing to recommend it, no beauty, no fame, a house number, a year not yet arrived. Its largest arrangement is 210, its smallest is 012, which is to say 12 with a nought standing guard in front of it, and 210 taken from by 12 leaves 198. So 201 has become 198, and already something has happened, for the number has forgotten where it started. Now work upon 198. The high tower is 981, the low ground is 189, and 981 less 189 is 792. Again. Upon 792 the rite gives 972 less 279, which is 693. Again. Upon 693 it gives 963 less 369, which is 594. And once more, the last time, upon 594 the rite gives 954 less 459, and the number comes to rest, and having come to rest it cannot rise again, for it has reached 四九五. Five turnings of the wheel, and the wanderer is home.
Choose another traveller and the ending does not change, only the length of the road. Take 753, three odd digits in a tidy descending row. Its high tower is already 753 and its low ground is 357, and the difference is 396. Then 396 becomes 963 less 369, which is 594, and 594, as we have just seen, becomes 四九五. Three steps, brisk as a man who knows the way. Or take the humblest number in the whole three-digit country, take 100 itself, a one and two attendant noughts. Its largest arrangement is 100 and its smallest is 001, and the difference is 099, which the rite insists we keep at its full three-digit length, the leading nought retained like a held breath. Then 099 becomes 990 less 099, which is 891. And 891 becomes 981 less 189, which is 792. And now 100 has joined the very road that 201 walked, for 792 gives 693, and 693 gives 594, and 594 gives 四九五. Six steps, the longest journey any number in this land is ever asked to make, and even the poorest pilgrim, starting from a mere hundred, arrives.
Walk a few more down, for the walking never quite loses its strangeness, and every traveller teaches the same lesson in a slightly different accent. Take 621, an ordinary number, a time of the evening. Its high tower is 621 and its low ground is 126, and the difference is 四九五, and so 621 arrives in a single stride, home almost before it has set out, one of the fortunate hundred and fifty who live already within sight of the door. Take 524, which looks no different from its neighbours. Its high tower is 542, its low ground is 245, and the difference is 297, one of the nine gates; and 297 becomes 693, and 693 becomes 594, and 594 becomes 四九五, four steps in all. Take 300, a round and confident number, sure of itself. Its high tower is 300 and its low ground is 003, and the difference is 297, and it too must file down through the gates, 693 and 594 and home. What strikes me, watching them, is how little the starting number's character predicts its journey. The humble 100 must go the whole six steps; the plain 621 arrives at once; the round 300 and the unremarkable 524 meet at the same gate of 297 and finish the road together, though they began as strangers. There is no reading a number's fate from its face. You must simply set it walking and watch, and whatever its face, its feet know the way.
That is the astonishment, stated plainly. It is not that some numbers reach 四九五. It is that all of them do, every last one that is permitted to try, and none of them takes longer than six turns of the wheel to get there. Mathematicians, who are not a people given to loose talk, have checked every eligible three-digit number, all nine hundred and ninety of them, and found no rebel, no straggler, no soul that wanders the corridors forever or slips out through some unwatched window into a different room. The land has one and only one destination, and the roads to it are short. You could, if you had the patience of a monk, verify the entire kingdom by hand in an afternoon, and having done so you would possess a small certainty of a kind the world rarely offers, a thing that is true and will stay true and asks nothing of your opinion.
There is a texture to the falling, too, a rhythm in how far the various numbers must travel, and those who love this rite have counted the pilgrims at each distance as a sexton might toll the hours. Of the numbers that qualify, exactly one has no distance to fall at all, for it is 四九五 itself, home before it starts, the still point. A hundred and fifty of them arrive in a single step, already close, already almost there. A hundred and forty-four take two steps. Two hundred and seventy, the largest company of all, take three. Two hundred and twenty-two take four. A hundred and fifty again take five. And a last small remnant of fifty-four must go the whole hard way, all six turnings, the six-step pilgrims, the ones who started furthest from grace. Add the companies together and they come to the full congregation, and not one is left standing outside the door. There is something in that tally that rings like a liturgy, the many who arrive quickly and the few who must labour, and all, in the end, admitted.
And yet the rite has a trap door, and honesty compels me to show it to you, because a mystery that hides its own exceptions is a cheat. There is exactly one way to fall through the floor into nothing instead of arriving at 四九五, and it is this. If your three digits are all the same, if you began not with a mongrel number but with a purebred one, 111 or 555 or 888, a number that is only one digit wearing three coats, then its largest arrangement and its smallest arrangement are the identical number, and their difference is nought, and you drop straight through the floor into zero and are gone. Nine numbers meet this fate, the nine repeated-digit numbers, and they meet it because they have no disagreement inside them for the rite to work upon. Here is the deepest teaching of the descent, and I give it to you without charge: the process needs a little quarrel among the parts to carry you home. A number perfectly at peace with itself, all its digits agreeing, goes precisely nowhere. It is difference that drives the descent. It is the gap between the high and the low in you that the rite reaches down and pulls. Everything mixed, everything unequal, everything that contains its own argument, finds 四九五. Only the falsely perfect fall.
I should add, for those who like their mysteries exact, that even the counting of the lost depends on a subtle choice, the treatment of the vanishing digit. If, as we have done, you insist that every number keep its full three-digit length, padding the front with noughts when a difference comes up short, then only those nine purebred numbers are ever lost, and all the rest come home. But if instead you let a number shrink when its leading digit falls away, let 099 collapse into a mere 99 and be judged as a two-digit thing, then a wider company slips through, exactly sixty numbers in all, the hundreds and their near kin, tumbling down to zero by a different arithmetic. Both accounts are true. They differ only in how they treat a nought at the front of a number, whether they honour it as a real place held open or dismiss it as an absence. It is a small thing, the courtesy you show to an empty column, and yet it changes who is saved and who is lost, which is perhaps the most quietly unsettling fact in the whole of this descent, and a fair warning that in these matters the conventions you adopt are never quite as innocent as they look.

Here is the place where the ordinary conjuror bows and pockets his fee and changes the subject before you can ask the only question that matters. But the art we are practising has a braver name and a braver custom. It is called mathemagic, and its whole honour lies in this, that its wonders are not sleight of hand but disguised theorems, and it will, if you ask, lift the cloth and show you the works, and the works turn out to be lovelier than the illusion. So let us ask. Why does every road lead to 四九五? Why this number and no other, and why without exception, and why so quickly? The answer is a single observation, and once you have seen it you can never unsee it, and the mystery does not die but changes its clothing and becomes understanding, which is a higher order of wonder than ignorance ever was.
Watch what the very first subtraction does, always, no matter what you fed into it. Call your three digits, once you have sorted them from greatest to least, by the names a and b and c, so that a is the largest and c the smallest and b sits between them. The high tower, the largest arrangement, is worth a hundred of a, and ten of b, and one of c. The low ground, the smallest arrangement, is worth a hundred of c, and ten of b, and one of a. Now subtract the low from the high and watch the middle vanish. The tens are ten of b in both, and they cancel and leave no trace. What remains is a hundred of a minus a hundred of c, and one of c minus one of a, which gathers itself into ninety-nine times the difference between your largest digit and your smallest. Every number the rite has ever produced, from the first step onward, is therefore a multiple of ninety-nine. It cannot be anything else. And since the high tower and the low ground are built from the very same digits, they carry the very same digit-sum, and so they leave the very same remainder when divided by nine, and their difference is swept clean of any nine-remainder at all. Every child of the rite is a multiple of nine. This is why no number the descent produces can ever be a prime, for it is forever divisible by nine, and it is why 四九五, which is nine multiplied by fifty-five, sits so comfortably at the bottom of the well. The whole enchantment lives inside the nine-times table like a fish inside water, and could not survive a moment outside it.
That single observation very nearly finishes the proof, and the rest is a short walk. After one subtraction you are no longer standing anywhere in the wide green field of three-digit numbers. You have been narrowed, in a single step, onto one of only nine tiles, the nine multiples of ninety-nine that wear a nine in the middle: 099, 198, 297, 396, 四九五, 594, 693, 792, 891. Nine gates, and no more than nine, and whatever number you began with, your first step set you down upon one of them. Now watch the gates themselves, for they are not still. Apply the rite to 099 and it becomes 891. Apply it to 891 and it becomes 792. Apply it to 792 and it becomes 693. Apply it to 693 and it becomes 594. And apply it to 594 and it becomes 四九五. The gates drain, one into the next, a chain of pools each spilling downhill into the one below, and every channel in the whole system runs, sooner or later, into the same low basin. From 297 the water falls to 693 and onward down. From 396 it falls to 594 and onward. From 198 it falls to 792 and onward. There is nowhere else for any of it to go. And when at last it reaches 四九五 the descent closes its own circle and holds, for the rite applied to 四九五 gives 954 less 459, which is 四九五 once more. The number subtracts a rearrangement of itself from itself and produces itself unchanged. It is the serpent that has found its own tail and closed its mouth upon it. This is what the mathematicians call a fixed point, and the plain meaning of that grand phrase is simply a place the transformation can no longer move you, because you have become the answer to the question it keeps asking. You may go on turning the wheel until your arm aches. 四九五 will not stir. It is already what the wheel is for.
See how cleanly the rule predicts a number's first landing, for it is governed by one thing only, the spread between its largest digit and its smallest. Take 837. Its digits sorted are eight and three and seven, so the largest is eight and the smallest three, and their spread is five, and ninety-nine times five is 四九五, and sure enough 873 less 378 is 四九五, and this number arrives at the throne in a single step, having a spread of exactly five. Take any number whose largest and smallest digits differ by five and it too will strike 四九五 on its first blow, whatever its middle digit, whatever its order. A spread of one lands you on 099, a spread of two on 198, a spread of three on 297, and so up the ladder, each spread assigned its own gate, until a spread of nine lands you on 891, the highest gate and the furthest from home. The whole of your first step, then, is decided before you take it, decided by nothing but the distance between your extremes, and the nine gates are simply the nine possible spreads made visible. There is a plain and slightly vertiginous truth in that. A number's entire destiny in this land is fixed by the gap between its most and its least, and everything in the middle, all the moderate part of it, cancels and counts for nothing. It is the extremes of a thing that decide where it falls.
Now lift your eyes from our own number for a moment and look along the whole family of such rites, the descents for numbers of other lengths, because 四九五 is far rarer and more fortunate than it first appears, and you only feel the good fortune by seeing how others fare. Take two-digit numbers down the same stairs and they never arrive anywhere at all. They have been denied a home. Set the rite upon them and they fall instead into an endless ring and pace it forever, from 09 to 81 to 63 to 27 to 45 and back to 09 again, round and round without rest, a soul with no heaven appointed to it, only a circle of purgatory to tread. There is no two-digit 四九五. There is no still point for them, only the wheel of return. But climb one storey higher, to the four-digit numbers, and the grace is restored and even deepened, for they too are given a single home, reached in no more than seven turnings, and its name is 6174, the very number the schoolteacher found first, before ours, the elder sibling of 四九五. Four-digit 6174 holds exactly as our number holds, for 7641 less 1467 is 6174, the same closed mouth, the same serpent. And yet climb one storey higher again, to five digits, and the grace shatters. The five-digit numbers have no single home but several rival ones, a scattering of fixed points and closed rings with no sovereign among them, a country fallen into faction. So it goes on up the lengths, sometimes a single throne, more often a divided kingdom.
There is a law beneath this, and it is a strange and beautiful one. A single three-digit home exists, the mathematicians proved, precisely when the base you are counting in is even. In our familiar base of ten, which is even, the home exists, and it is 四九五. Had we been born with an odd number of fingers and learned to count in nines or elevens, there would be no single three-digit constant at all, only rings and factions, and this essay could not have been written, or would have had to be written about some other number in some other tongue. The wonder we are examining is not free-floating. It is pinned to the accident of our anatomy, to the ten fingers we happen to carry, and it would dissolve if the world had dealt our hands differently. That so much apparent destiny should hang upon so contingent a thing as the count of our fingers is either the emptiest of coincidences or the most pregnant, and I will let you choose, but I would ask you to notice that you cannot easily stop yourself from choosing.
The man who first walked these corridors and mapped them was Dattatreya Ramchandra Kaprekar, born in the January of 1905 in the coastal town of Dahanu and dead in the July of 1986, who never in his long life held a university post or drew a scholar's salary. He was a schoolmaster in the small town of Devlali in Maharashtra, and he spent his years turning numbers over and over in his hands as a jeweller turns a stone, tilting them to the light to see what was written on the underside where no one else had thought to look. He found the four-digit constant, 6174, in the middle years of the century, and announced it, and published it in journals of small circulation that the wider world did not read, and for a long while the wider world did not know his name. It reached us at last by an unlikely road, for the great populariser Martin Gardner set it before the readers of Scientific American in the March of 1975, in the column he kept there for a quarter of a century, and only then did the schoolteacher of Devlali become, posthumously and to his own countrymen belatedly, one of the folk-heroes of number. The three-digit case, our own 四九五, was set down in its own right by Charles Trigg in 1974 and fastened shut with full rigour by later hands, and those later hands proved the thing that gives 四九五 its final dignity, that in all of base ten there are only two true constants of this kind, only two numbers that gather an entire generation of their own length home to a single door, and they are 6174 and 四九五, and no others, not among the four-digit numbers, not among any. Two thrones in the whole of ordinary counting, and 四九五 sits upon the smaller of them. A provincial teacher, some spare afternoons, a pencil, and a truth that will outlast every institution now standing and every currency now spent. That is the company our number keeps, and it is better company than most numbers ever find.
He was not, for all his obscurity, a man without gifts that the wider world had once acknowledged. He had won a mathematical prize as a young man, the Wrangler Paranjpe prize, in 1927, and had taken his degree at Fergusson College in Pune, and he carried his four-digit discovery to a mathematical conference at Madras in the closing years of the 1940s, so that the marvel was spoken aloud in a hall of scholars before it was written down. But he published, when he published at all, in journals so small and so local that the bibliographers to this day cannot fully agree on which title appeared in which volume in which year, the same discovery surfacing under more than one name, the page numbers wandering from one citation to the next. There is a melancholy in that, and also a kind of purity. The schoolteacher was not writing for tenure or for fame. He was writing because he had seen something true on the underside of a number and could not keep silent about it, and he set it down in whatever modest place would take it, trusting the truth to outlast the smallness of its vessel, as in the end it has. The vessels are forgotten. The truth walks the world.
And the truth, I have said, is pinned to the evenness of our base, and I want to dwell one moment more upon the desolation that reigns in the odd bases, because it throws the grace of our own case into relief. Work the general arithmetic, as the later mathematicians did, and you find that a single three-digit home exists if, and only if, the base you count in is even; in every odd base the numbers are condemned to the two-digit fate, to rings without rest, to a purgatory of return with no still point appointed anywhere in it. Ours is one of the fortunate worlds. Ten fingers, an even count, and so a home exists, and it is 四九五. Had our hands carried nine fingers or eleven, the three-digit numbers of that world would circle forever and no traveller among them would ever arrive, and no essay like this one could be composed in that language, for there would be no destination to compose it about. The whole shimmering edifice of meaning we are raising rests upon the plain fact that we happen to have grown an even number of fingers, and I cannot decide whether that makes the meaning more fragile or more precious, and I have come to suspect that it makes it both at once.
One last caution before we climb back into the light, a caution against a confusion the careless fall into. The thing we have been describing, the constant, the fixed point of the subtracting rite, is not the only enchantment that carries Kaprekar's name, and it must not be muddled with its cousin. There are also what men call Kaprekar's numbers, which are an entirely different marvel: numbers whose squares can be cut in two and the two pieces added back to give the number you began with. Forty-five is such a number, for forty-five squared is 2025, and 20 and 25 together make 45 again. Two hundred and ninety-seven is another, for its square is 88209, and 88 and 209 together make 297. These are real and they are lovely, but they are a separate spell with a shared surname, and 四九五, which is a constant, is not one of them. Do not let the coincidence of the name persuade you the two are the same magic. They are two different doors in the same wall, and the schoolteacher of Devlali found them both, and left us to keep them properly apart.

Every sacred object has an anatomy, a body that may be reverently taken apart to see what holy machinery lies within, and 四九五 rewards the dissection more richly than almost any number of its modest size. Lay it on the table and open it along its natural seams, and the first thing you find is its prime constitution, the irreducible powers from which it is compounded, and they are these: 四九五 is three, squared, multiplied by five, multiplied by eleven. A nine folded into the number twice over as the square of three, and married there to a five and to an eleven. From those three seeds, and from the particular way they are sown, grows a very specific harvest of divisors, the numbers that share 四九五 out evenly with nothing left over, and there are exactly twelve of them, which is itself one of the old complete numbers, the count of the months and the tribes and the hours upon the face of a clock. Name them, for naming is a kind of honouring: one, and three, and five, and nine, and eleven, and fifteen, and thirty-three, and forty-five, and fifty-five, and ninety-nine, and a hundred and sixty-five, and 四九五 itself. Twelve keys, and each one opens the number cleanly. And written another way, plainer still, 四九五 is nine multiplied by fifty-five, so that the nine which ruled the whole descent stands here again, unhidden, beating in the number's open chest.
Gather now all the divisors that are smaller than the number itself, all its parts save the whole, and add them together, for the ancients believed a number's character was written in this sum, in whether a thing could rebuild itself from its own pieces. The lesser divisors of 四九五 come to four hundred and forty-one, and four hundred and forty-one falls short of 四九五. The number cannot reconstruct itself from its own parts. It is what the old arithmeticians called deficient, a number that contains less than itself, that gives back, when broken up, a little less than it is. There is a fitness in that for a number whose whole vocation is to be a destination and never a source, an ending that keeps rather than spends, a still place where the additions come to rest. And there is a small secret folded even into its deficiency, for that shortfall, four hundred and forty-one, is itself a perfect square, the number twenty-one multiplied by itself, so that even in coming up short 四九五 comes up short by an exact and shapely amount, deficient by a perfect square, as if the number could not bear to be irregular even in its lack.
It carries, too, a quiet act of disobedience that I find more charming the longer I look at it. Add the plain digits of 四九五, the four and the nine and the five, and they come to eighteen, and add those in turn, one and eight, and they come to nine, so the number folds down, in the end, to the nine that governs everything here. Because of this the number is divisible by nine, dutifully, without remainder. And yet it is not divisible by its own digit-sum of eighteen, for 四九五 divided by eighteen comes to twenty-seven and a half, and stops there, refusing. There is a class of especially obedient numbers, the ones that are divisible by the sum of their own digits, and one is tempted at a glance to enrol 四九五 among them, since it wears its nine so openly. But it declines the honour. It bows to nine and defies eighteen. It looks, for a moment, perfectly biddable, and then, when you test it, it will not be led all the way. I confess a fondness for that. A number that is exactly as obedient as it chooses to be, and no further, has a dignity that the merely compliant numbers lack.
But the property that I cannot shake, the one that visits me when I am not thinking of numbers at all, is a matter of counting choices. There is a kind of number that answers the question, in how many ways may I choose a handful of things from a larger heap, caring nothing for the order in which I lift them. Ask how many different quartets can be drawn from a company of twelve, four chosen out of twelve, and the answer, exactly and without rounding, is 四九五. Four from twelve, and every possible four, and their number is our number precisely, 四九五 and nothing else. Think what a strange coincidence that is, that the number which swallows every three-digit road should also be the exact count of all the ways four things may be chosen from twelve, the number of possible teams of four in a room of twelve, the number of possible weeks you might pick from a season, and each of these countings lands on 四九五 and no other figure. It is, in the language of shapes, the ninth of the pentatope numbers, which are the four-dimensional pyramids, solids that our three-dimensional eyes will never see whole, and 四九五 counts the points in one of them without effort, as though it kept a foot in a room we cannot enter. And the countings go on. It is the number of interior crossings you would find if you drew every diagonal across a twelve-sided figure and let them intersect where they may. It is the number of small pieces you would cut an annulus into, a flat ring, with thirty straight cuts laid across it. The same 四九五, over and over, rising unbidden out of unrelated questions, the way a face you have loved keeps surfacing in crowds. A number that appears in that many separate countings is more than large. It is, in some sense we lack the vocabulary to make precise, structurally deep, wound into the grain of how quantity itself is put together.
And it wears disguises, for it can be written in any base you please and each writing gives it a different face, and some of those faces are palindromes, those small verbal charms that read the same forward and backward, spells against the arrow of time. Write 四九五 in the base of twos, the naked binary that machines whisper to one another, and it becomes 111101111, a string that is the mirror of itself about its own centre, four ones and a nought and four ones, symmetrical as a temple. Write it in the base of twelves, the duodecimal that our clocks and our dozens secretly prefer, and it becomes 353, symmetrical again, a small palindrome nested inside the number's hidden dozenal soul. In the base of eights it is 757, and I leave you to notice that this too reads the same both ways. In the hexadecimal that the machines use for shorthand it is 1EF, and in the old Roman capitals it is CDXCV, and in each costume it is the same underlying power differently dressed. A number that shows you palindromes in three different bases is a number fond of mirrors, and there is an old and reasonable superstition that things which read the same in both directions have some protection against the ordinary decay that eats everything else, that a palindrome is a little charm sewn into the lining of the world.
Nor does 四九五 keep to itself, for it belongs to a whole guild of numbers that behave like conjured things, a fellowship gathered up and set down a little under a century ago by an unlikely master, a New York stockbroker and Sunday magician named Royal Vale Heath, whose book of 1933 was called, with a perfectly straight face, Mathemagic, and gave our whole art its name. In that same guild lives the trick of the number 1089, which is 四九五's near twin and worth performing for any child who doubts that arithmetic can astonish. Take a three-digit number whose first and last digits differ by at least two, reverse it, subtract the smaller from the larger, and then add that result to its own reversal, and you will land, every single time, upon 1089, the way our own rite lands upon 四九五, a different door in the same enchanted wall. In the guild lives the casting out of nines, and it deserves more than a passing mention here, for it is the same nine that ruled our whole descent, come back in a conjuror's mask. The secret is a plain fact of arithmetic, that any number leaves the very same remainder on division by nine as the simple sum of its digits does, so that a number and its digit-sum are, in the arithmetic of nines, one and the same. Upon this single fact a hundred effects are built. The performer bids you choose a great number in secret, shuffle its digits, subtract, strike out any one digit you please and read him the rest, and he names the struck digit as though he had watched your hand, when all he has done is add what you gave him, cast out the nines, and see what is missing from a total he knew in advance must be a multiple of nine. It is mind-reading that is nothing but modular arithmetic in a domino mask, and the working men of number kept it for a humbler purpose too, as a check upon their sums, a quick way to catch an error, for if the nines of the answer do not match the nines of the parts then somewhere a slip has crept in. The same nine that drags every three-digit number home to 四九五 also stands sentry over the accountant's ledger and lends the stage magician his false telepathy. It is a busy number, the nine, and 四九五 is nine's own creature twice over, being nine times fifty-five and folding back down to nine when its digits are summed. There lives the cyclic number 142857, the repeating heart of one-seventh, which when multiplied by two or three or four or five or six does not scramble into some new figure but merely shuffles its own six digits round into a new order, the same six dancers forever changing places and never leaving the floor. And there live the magic squares, those grids in which every row and every column and every long diagonal add to the one same constant, from the ancient Lo Shu of China, the unique three-by-three square that legend says was read from the shell of a turtle risen out of a river, to the four-by-four square Albrecht Dürer engraved into his Melencolia of 1514, every line of which sums to thirty-four, and which hides the year of its making, 1514, in the two central cells of its lowest row, a signature in numbers pressed into the plate. There were even living men who belonged to this guild by sheer gift, human calculators like Shakuntala Devi, who multiplied two thirteen-digit numbers in her head faster than others could write them down, and Wim Klein, who kept the sums for the physicists at CERN before the machines took his place. This guild is older than Heath, of course, for he only gave a new name to a very old delight. Behind him stands a whole lineage of the keepers of recreational mathematics, the men who understood that a truth is best remembered when it arrives disguised as a game. There is W. W. Rouse Ball, whose Mathematical Recreations and Essays, first set before the world at the close of the nineteenth century, became the standing treasury of such things and ran through edition after edition. There is Édouard Lucas, the French master of numbers, who lent his name to a famous sequence and gave the world the Tower of Hanoi and wrote his own many volumes of mathematical recreations. There are Henry Dudeney in England and Sam Loyd in America, the two great composers of puzzles, who set problems that are still passed hand to hand a century after their deaths. And there is, presiding over all the later company, Martin Gardner himself, who for a quarter of a century carried these marvels to a vast readership and gathered many of Heath's own tricks into his books on mathematics and magic and mystery, so that the thread runs unbroken from the Sunday-magician stockbroker to the columnist who made 四九五's elder brother famous. Our number belongs, by right of its behaviour, to this entire fellowship of the delightful, and would have earned a page in any of their treasuries.
The magic squares in particular are worth one further glance, for they show most clearly how a thing wrapped for centuries in talisman and portent turns out, when unwrapped, to be pure and provable mathematics, which is precisely the double life 四九五 leads. A magic square is a grid of distinct whole numbers in which every row, every column, and both long diagonals add to one same total, and that total is no mystery but a matter of simple reckoning: for a square built from the first several counting numbers it is fixed exactly by the size of the square, calculable in a line. These objects were carried for ages as charms, engraved on amulets, assigned to the planets, pressed against illness and misfortune, and the Lo Shu of the Chinese, the unique three-by-three arrangement, sits to this day at the root of a whole practice of placing and building. And yet everything of interest in them is demonstrable fact. That the Lo Shu is the only three-by-three square there is, up to turning and reflection, is a thing one can prove in an afternoon. That there are exactly a certain fixed number of the four-by-four squares, thousands of them, and a vast and exactly known multitude of the five-by-five, is settled arithmetic, counted and confirmed. The talisman was always a theorem in a charm's clothing. That is the very lesson of 四九五, and the magic squares teach it in a different key: the wonder is real, and it is real because it is true, and the mysticism that gathered around it, however beautiful, was a garment draped over a body that stood up perfectly well on its own.
All of these are theorems wearing capes, marvels whose secret is a proof, and 四九五 stands among them as the one that quietly swallows every three-digit road there is.
V. The ascent
Come up now, out of the machinery, out of the clean cold rooms of proof, and climb into the older and dimmer air above them, the air numbers breathed for thousands of years before anyone thought to demand a proof of them, the air in which a number was not calculated but consulted, not solved but asked. For long before 四九五 was a fixed point it would have been a portent, and the men who would have read it as a portent were not fools, they were the same men who gave us geometry, and it is worth remembering that at the fountainhead of all our mathematics the sum and the omen were poured from the same jug.
They were poured from the jug of Pythagoras, who taught, five centuries before our era, that all things are number, that number is the very stuff and key of the cosmos, that behind the shifting face of the world there stands an eternal order and the order is arithmetical. His followers held the numbers to be alive with meaning, and assigned to each its nature: the one was the origin and the unity, the source from which all else proceeds; the two was the principle of the female, and the three of the male, and their union in the five was marriage; the four was justice, foursquare and balanced. Above them all they set the ten as the most perfect number, because it is the sum of the first four, one and two and three and four gathered into a single fullness, and they drew it as the tetractys, a holy triangle of ten points in four rising rows, and they are said to have sworn their most binding oaths upon it, as a Christian swears upon the book. This matters to us because Pythagoras stands at the very fork of the road, doing serious mathematics and serious mysticism with the same hand and seeing no seam between them, the ratios of the musical scale, which are real and which he truly found, and the sacredness of the ten, which is belief, drawn from one and the same well. The parting of those two waters was the slow work of millennia, and it is only in the mirror of that ancient unity that we can read the double life of our own number honestly.
It is worth lingering at that fork, for it is the source of everything that follows in this movement, and the tetractys deserves more than a passing bow. Picture it: a single point at the summit, then two beneath, then three, then four along the base, ten points in a rising triangle, and in that one small figure the Pythagoreans read the whole architecture of things. The four rows were the point and the line and the plane and the solid, the whole ascent from nothing into space. The ten was the return of all multiplicity into a single completeness. And the ratios hidden in those first four numbers were the ratios of the sounding string, the octave and the fifth and the fourth, the very intervals that make music tolerable to the ear, so that when the Pythagoreans said the cosmos was harmony they meant it with a mathematician's precision and a mystic's awe in the same breath. Here is the thing modern readers find hardest to hold in mind: to those men there was no seam between the two. The discovery that a string halved sounds an octave higher, which is true and testable and ours to this day, and the conviction that the number ten is holy, which is belief and nothing more, were not two activities but one, poured from a single devotion. All the later separating of the sound from the omen, of the mathematics from the mysticism, is downstream of this fountain, and our own number lives its double life because it was born, as every number was, from this undivided source.
For 四九五 too has its numerologists, and they read it first through its folding. Four and nine and five make eighteen, and eighteen makes nine, and the nine to which the number reduces is, in their long tradition, the number of Mars, of iron and fire and the driving will, and it is the last of the single digits and therefore the number of every ending, the one that stands at the close of each cycle and turns it over into the next. A number that folds down to nine is a number about completion, about the finishing of a long turning and the readiness for what will follow it. And they read the three digits, besides, as a kind of sentence, a spiritual biography in three strokes. The four at the head is the foundation, solid ground, the walls laid square and the house made able to stand. The nine at the centre is the seeker who has been all the way round, the wisdom that comes only at the end of the circuit, the pilgrim near the close of the road. And the five at the tail is the restless pivot, freedom and change and the wind getting up before a journey, the refusal to be still. Foundation, then completion, then release: a whole life told in three figures, the settling and the seeking and the letting go, and the numerologist finds it written into the very order of the digits of 四九五.
Those who watch for the recurring numbers, the ones that surface again and again upon clocks and receipts and the plates of passing cars until the watcher feels personally addressed by them, name 四九五 a number of manifestation, a number that appears to a soul when the things it has been building are ready at last to stand on their own. To meet it and meet it again, they say, is to be told that a cycle is closing not by accident but on purpose, that the ending approaching is not a loss but a threshold, that the turn should be trusted and the door walked through. It is, in their gentle grammar, the way the unseen speaks reassurance to the seen, the angel's method of saying that the long work is nearly done and was never wasted.
Deeper and older still runs gematria, and its Greek sister isopsephy, and its Arabic cousin the abjad, the ancient and universal art practised wherever the letters of an alphabet are also its numerals, so that every written word carries a hidden sum and any two words that weigh the same upon that scale are held to be secretly akin. This was no marginal superstition but a normal habit of the literate ancient mind, a way of reading beneath reading, and by its lights 四九五 has been tied to the phrase awake to see God's face, the number standing as a cipher for the very instant the sleeper opens his eyes upon the divine, the waking into vision. The most famous working of this whole art is the darkest, the number of the beast set down in the book of Revelation, the 666 that has frightened the credulous for twenty centuries, and the sober reading of it is that it too is a name in numerical disguise, the letters of Nero Caesar written in the Hebrew hand and summed, which is why the oldest copies give the variant 616, a different spelling of the same hated emperor summing a little lower. I set this beside 四九五 not to frighten you but to show you the machinery of the tradition, the conviction that a number can be a name folded up small, that to read the number rightly is to unfold the name, and that scripture itself plays this game in its most feverish pages.
And above the gematria, or rather threaded all through it, stands the great architecture of the Kabbalah, the Jewish mysticism in which number is the very scaffolding of creation. There the infinite pours itself down into the finite through ten luminous vessels, the ten Sefirot, strung upon the diagram men call the Tree of Life, and the descent of the divine light from vessel to vessel is the making of the world. In such a scheme a number is never merely a magnitude. It is a channel, a particular conduit through which the light comes down, a name for one of the ways the infinite consents to become the finite. And 四九五, folding as it does to the nine of completion, standing as it does for the last turn of the cycle before the return, sits without strain among these readings as a number of the soul near the very end of its long circuit outward, poised at the threshold of its coming home. Across the many nations that keep such books, in the traditions of the East as in the West, the number is met as a bearer of prosperity and of protection, a figure to be welcomed rather than warded off, a small good omen rendered in the universal script of quantity.
It sits, finally, among the whole company of the sacred numbers of the world, and it is worth walking that company once, to feel how thickly mankind has hung its meanings upon the counting numbers, for 四九五 does not keep its mysticism in a vacuum. There is the three of the Christian Trinity and of a hundred older triads besides. There is the seven of the days of creation and of the seven wandering stars the ancients could see, held lucky across almost the whole earth. There is the eight of the Chinese, the luckiest of their numbers, because in their tongue it chimes with the word for prospering, so that a telephone line strung with eights has sold for a fortune. There is the four they dread, on the very opposite side of the ledger, because it chimes with their word for death, and is struck from the floors of their buildings as we strike the thirteenth. There is the ten the Pythagoreans crowned as perfect. There is the twelve of the tribes and the apostles and the signs of the turning zodiac. There is the thirteen the West has feared since one too many sat at a certain supper. There is the hundred and eight of the Hindu and the Buddhist, the beads told upon the mala, the sacred round of the prayer, a number men have tried to explain by the turning of the heavens and the count of the lunar mansions, though the true root of its holiness is older than any of the explanations offered for it. Notice, as you walk this company, how much of it can be read two ways at once, how the seven that is lucky across most of the earth is elsewhere a number of the dead, how the thirteen the West flinches from is welcomed in Italy and in China, how the very same figure changes its fortune as it crosses a border, exactly as our own three characters will do in the movement to come. That ambivalence is not a flaw in the traditions. It is the tell that gives their true nature away, that the meaning was never seated in the number but always in the people gathered around it, and it is a tell we will read in full when we turn at last to the kanji themselves. Into this ancient and crowded company 四九五 walks and takes its place, wearing, as we have seen, the colours of completion and prosperity, a number the traditions would have you greet with a small bow rather than a flinch, at least until you carry it east, where the bow becomes something else.
VI. Four, nine, five
I have kept the number in its Japanese dress for the whole length of this essay, patiently, through every turn of it, and I have done so with a purpose that only now comes fully into the light, for the purpose was always in the three characters themselves, and it is time to read them.
四 is shi, the four, and shi is also, in the mouth, the very sound of another word, the word 死, which is death. And 九 is ku, the nine, and ku is also the sound of another word, the word 苦, which is suffering, the whole hard toil and ache of being alive. Across the great swathe of the East, across China and Korea and Japan, these are the shadowed syllables, the numbers that carry a chill, and men there do with them exactly what we do with our own unlucky thirteen: they leave them off. The four is struck from the buttons of the lift and the doors of the hospital ward and the numbering of the floors, quietly omitted, stepped over, because who would choose to lie recovering upon the floor of death. And so consider what our number becomes when it is read in that other air. The 四九五 that the Western numerologist greets as a blessing, as the fire of Mars folding down into the peace of completion, is in the Eastern mouth a procession of its two most dreaded sounds, death and then suffering, shi and ku, resolving only at the last into 五, the plain and steady five, the one untroubled character of the three. Death, then suffering, then an ordinary five to end on. The very same three marks. A blessing in one book and a dread in another, and nothing whatever has changed but the reader.
That ought to trouble the whole enterprise, and by rights it ought to bring the essay down, for how can a number be both a blessing and a curse, and if it can be either at the wish of the reader then surely it is really neither, and all the meaning we have poured over it drains away into the sand. And yet I find it, when I sit with it honestly, the most enchanting fact in the whole account, and I will tell you why. A number is a small hard fact. 四九五 is exactly as many as it is, no more and no fewer, precisely the same quantity in Devlali as in Kyoto, in the mouth of the numerologist as in the mouth of the man who fears the fourth floor. Nothing about the quantity shifts when you carry it across the border. Everything else shifts. The Mars and the death, the completion and the suffering, the blessing and the dread: none of these was ever in the number. All of them are in us. We are the instrument that turns quantity into sign. We are the organ that reads meaning into the meaningless, and it is the finest and most necessary organ we possess, and it never rests.
For this is the plainest lesson the whole descent has been carrying toward you, and it is a lesson about the reader and not about the read. Stand any sufficiently rich number in front of the human mind and the mind will begin, at once and helplessly, to hear it speaking, because hearing pattern in what surrounds us is the oldest and the most useful thing minds have ever learned to do. The ancestor who heard a meaning in the rustle of the grass, who read a pattern where there might have been only wind, and who ran, left more children behind him than the ancestor who waited, calm and rational, to be certain. We are the descendants of the ones who saw faces in the dark and shapes in the clouds and omens in the numbers, and we cannot switch the seeing off, nor should we wish to, for it is the same faculty that finds the true patterns as finds the false ones, the same reaching mind that heard music in the ratios of a plucked string and heard, wrongly, a god in a lucky number. The finding of patterns is not a flaw bolted onto us. It is the very engine of our knowing, and it runs whether the pattern is there or not, and the wonder of a number like 四九五 is that it offers the engine such rich and genuine fuel, so many true coincidences to feed upon that a few invented ones can hardly be blamed for slipping in among them.
This reaching faculty has been given names by those who study it, though the names do not tame it. A German psychiatrist christened it apophenia in the middle of the last century, the perceiving of connection and meaning where there is only randomness and noise, and a modern science writer relabelled it more warmly as patternicity, the tendency to find meaningful patterns in meaningless static, and argued that it is no malfunction of the mind but one of the mind's oldest and most necessary tools, an evolved gift that kept our ancestors alive. And when those who study it draw up their lists of where this faculty runs on into excess, the lists are always the same, and they always include exactly our subject: superstition, and the reading of the numbers, and the choosing of a lottery ticket by the date of a birth. In other words the very sensation that a number is charged with meaning, that 四九五 is speaking, is from the cold outside the pattern-detector doing precisely what it was built to do, firing in a domain that happens to be unusually rich in genuine coincidence and so unusually easy to over-read. But notice, and this is the whole turn of the essay, that naming the faculty does not shame it and does not silence it. The same reaching mind that hears a false god in a lucky number is the mind that heard a true harmony in a plucked string, and there is no getting the one without the other, no faculty that finds only the real patterns and never the imagined ones, for it is a single organ and it does not know, as it reaches, which of its findings will survive the testing. We are pattern-seekers to the root, and the seeking is our glory, and a number as genuinely deep as 四九五 is simply irresistible bait for it.
Other numbers have been heard singing this same way, and heard so loudly that whole cathedrals of belief were raised upon the sound. The golden ratio, that famous proportion near one and six-tenths, has been claimed in the Parthenon and the pyramids and the faces of the beautiful and the spirals of shells, sung about in a thousand books as the very fingerprint of beauty pressed into the world. Much of the singing, when men went to measure it, turned out to be the measurers hearing what they had come to hear, choosing where to lay the ruler so that the answer would oblige them. And yet the ratio is real, and truly does live in the pentagon and in the turning of leaves about a stem, so that even here the pattern-seeking mind was not simply deluded but over-eager, finding a real jewel and then insisting on seeing it set in every ring. So it is with 四九五. The descent is real, as real as anything in this world, checkable tonight with a pencil. The meanings we drape upon it are our own weaving. And the meanings are not therefore worthless, any more than a song is worthless because the nightingale did not compose it for you. They are the sound our pattern-hungry minds make when a genuinely deep number is set ringing before them. Meaning pours out of us, freely, onto whatever will hold it, and 四九五, which holds so very much that is true, turns out to be an uncommonly deep cup to pour into.
VII. Home
So go back now, at the very last, to the number you chose at the very first, the one you wrote on the back of the envelope where I could not see it, and which I told you, with more confidence than you thought I had any right to, was never really yours. Run it down the stairs, if you have not already done so in the reading. Watch it lose, step by patient step, whatever it was that made it feel like your own particular number, its digits marshalled high and then low and subtracted, again and again, the personality draining out of it with each turn of the wheel, until it stands at last in the same lit room as every other number in the land, stripped of its accidents, and the name carved over the door of that room, the only room there is, is 四九五.
This is the still point the whole essay has been circling from its first line, and I can name it plainly now that you have walked to it yourself. It is not a number you happen upon once and pass by. It is the number that every arrival arrives at, the place the transformation finally runs out of anywhere else to send you, the one destination in a country of nine hundred travellers. Of all the three-digit numbers there are, it is the only one that is its own destination, the only one that answers the question by being the answer the question was always seeking, the only one at which the restless rite lies down and is still. You may dress it, as men have always dressed it, in the robes of Mars and the completion of cycles, in the gematria of the waking face of God, in the luminous vessels of the Tree of Life, or in the shadowed syllables of death and suffering; or you may strip it back to the cold plain truth that it is ninety-nine times the difference of a largest and a smallest digit, nine times fifty-five, the fixed point of a subtracting map in an even base. It does not mind either way. It wore no robes before you brought them, and it will wear none after you take them away. It was there before you began to guess at it, and it will be there, exactly as many as it has always been, long after you and I have stopped.
Consider, before the last turn, how much the number has carried for us across these pages, and how lightly it has carried it. It has been the fixed point of a subtracting rite and the swallower of nine hundred roads. It has been ninety-nine times a difference of digits, and nine times fifty-five, and the count of every way to choose four things from twelve, and a four-dimensional pyramid seen edge-on, and a palindrome in three separate bases, and a deficient number falling short of itself by a perfect square. It has been the fire of Mars and the completion of a cycle, the waking to the face of God, a channel of the descending light, a bearer of prosperity in the West and a procession of death and suffering in the East. It has been, in short, whatever we needed it to be, and it has remained, underneath every costume, the same plain quantity it was before we ever looked at it. That is the strange generosity of a deep number. It gives each of us the meaning we bring to it and keeps, for itself, only the being exactly as many as it is. We decorate; it endures.
And here, at the end, is the last turn of the trick, the turn that the ordinary conjuror can never offer you and that the mathemagician always can, and it is the turn that makes all the difference between the two crafts, and I have saved it for you deliberately. Everything the mystics have ever said about 四九五, every meaning in the long ascent of the fifth movement, the Mars and the manifestation and the Sefirot and the sacred company of the numbers, all of it you are entirely free to believe or to set gently down, as your temper inclines you, and the number will not reproach you for either choice. But the descent is not a matter of belief, and it never was. You do not have to take it on faith. You can check it. Take a number, any number you please, tonight or a hundred years from tonight, and walk it patiently down the stairs, and it will come home to 四九五, and it will do so again tomorrow, and again on every night that there will ever be, without one single exception in all the numbers there are or ever could be. That is the real magic, the magic that was hiding in plain sight beneath all the borrowed robes, and it is real for the precise and wonderful reason that it asks nothing at all of your faith. It does not need you to believe in it. It needs only that you try it, and it keeps its promise every time you do. The universe, just here, in this one small and checkable place, has given its word, and the word is 四九五, and it has never once been broken.
